I read recently that President Jacob Zuma of South Africa has five wives and possibly a sixth in view. Lucky him some may say but, just for a moment, consider this possible aspect of polygamy. Lets assume that it is a woman who is the person with multiple husbands! Just how can we imagine this scenario would this pan out?
First of all the sleeping arrangements with all these husbands, now doubt all “alpha males”, vying for preferential treatment. Who for example would be in the double bed for the night or one of the spare rooms or, heavens forbid, the husbands dormitory!!
There there is the matter of laundry. Would the lady of the house be expected to do the washing and ironing for all the husbands?
Cooking, would the wife still be expected to cook for all of the husbands (except of barbecue days of course) or would the husbands take it in turns cook and thus create a huge amount of washing up? Hell, who would do that, the wife?
Then there would be the matter of the TV remote. This symbol of male superiority would now be in the hands of a woman!! Would sports TV be a forgotten viewing treat for men (admittedly not ALL men)? Or would “loose Women” take over?
How many towels would be left wet on the bathroom floor, for ever and a day?
I cannot add any more to this list of unlikely woe’s given that women have clearly sussed the disadvantages of polygamy for women and have decided that surely, one man is enough.
Have though men not worked out that often the saying “less is more” should be enough and NOT take on more wives?
Well Jacob, all I can say is, each to his own.
