OK, I know it’s well past Christmas and no where near next Christmas but I just had to post this advert from the Express Dairy for a Christmas Hamper in 1973.
Yes, 33 items for a total of £6.80 which by today’s standards would be around £65. However, it is very very unlikely that you would be able to buy a hamper in 2011 and get the same value for money.
This little example may only include some wine but I don’t for one moment think it is a particularly expensive vintage.
This hamper contains:
Langlois Crémant de Loire Brut (France) Sparkling Wine – 750ml
Colli Vicentini Merlot (2009) Italy – 75cl
Colli Vicentini Pinot Grigio Garganega (2009) Italy – 75cl
Barwise’s Mince Pies x 6 – 350g
Barwise’s Crunchy Ginger Biscuits – 165g
Barwise’s Oatcakes – 125g
Barwise’s Christmas Pudding – 440g
Barwise’s Brandy Glazed Fruit Cake – 650g

Raydale Preserves Strawberry & Champagne Preserve – 227g
Raydale Preserves Pink Grapefruit Marmalade – 227g
