It’s with some interest that I view the current events unfolding in Libya at this time. Hearing and seeing the old names of the places I knew back in 1967 bring back many memories of driving from Tobruk
to Timimi (a war time desert airfield near a very small village)
and then later being encamped near the sea at Derna, where the soil was deep red in colour and in the rain made you look like you were covered in blood.
and the road with so many hairpin bends that some journeys in a 10 Ton AEC truck laden with 300 empty Jerry cans
to the RAF base at El Adem was exciting to say the least!
Well all I can say that once I had endured the three hour drive I needed the shower that was available at the RAF base at El Adem. The drive anywhere in Libya was usually “interesting” in that you could be accosted by dodgy hitchhikers (mainly Arab) or overtaken by Monks (mainly Italian) or driven off the road by a grey Rolls Royce (usually King Idris).
Well, you can see the chaos I left behind by just looking at the news on TV!!!
