I woke up this morning, turned on the TV and laid back to wait for the central heating to be blasting out to full effect and then the BBC News came on and jerked me into a more wakeful state! After all the reports about some anti-cuts subject, then a bit of coalition bashing and some other tosh and then came the bombshell. Some “New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics urge parents to recognize fever as a sign that the body is working to fight infection and not something to be feared.” Who ever they are when they are at home. Anyway, off went the BBC to interview mothers outside a school somewhere in Britain. Now, this is where I found it worrying, there was not one single ethnically British woman to be found to interview!!! There was an Auzzie, an Italian and two others of indeterminate origins who all gave very lucid and articulate replies to the question. (Perhaps that’s the issue then, may be they had to leave a lot of home grown comments on the cutting room floor?) – well what with the other BBC habit on Radio 4 of late of only interviewing American academics as “expert commentators” I am staring to believe that there are not Brits left here!!! Here in leafy Sussex we are fortunate not to have too many diverse languages to cope with (apart from that spoken by teenagers) but I am considering learning Polish for when I am at the weekly market as that does seem to be the predominant language spoken there. However, the local Big Issue do seem to be speaking another language I have yet to identify but I am sure it is east European. Again, that spoken by British teenagers is still tantalizingly far from my ability to translate it into anything our Polish and other European residents can reasonably understand, “like”. (geddit it?) …
Ah, now that reminds me! Did anyone see that truly awful, dreadful or cringingly embarrassing adverts for Thomas Cook? “We dream abaad id”… Well that’s what it sounded like it to me… annunciate young lady, annunciate!!! I have not seen the ads for some time now so I can only pray that some sane member of the Thos Cook marketing department had the good sense to pull the ads before any real people had a chance to have fits! Cringe here
Here is another fine example of one of our exports…. John Gallinano
I say no more!
