George Orwell – 1984

A question.

1984 or 2011?

The inhabitants of ??????? particularly the party members, have no real privacy. Many of them live in apartments equipped with two-way telescreens, so that they may be watched or listened to at any time. Similar telescreens are found at workstations and in public places, along with hidden microphones. Written correspondence is routinely opened and read by the government before it is delivered. The Thought Police employ undercover agents, who pose as normal citizens and report any person with subversive tendencies. Children are encouraged to report suspicious persons to the government, and some even denounce their own parents.

This surveillance allows for effective control of the citizenry. The smallest sign of rebellion, even something so small as a facial expression, can result in immediate arrest and imprisonment. Thus, citizens (and particularly party members) are compelled to absolute obedience at all times.

Given the recent hysteria in Britain today surrounding Christian B&B owners, Sports Commentators, sexism, racism, islamaphobia, secularism, the Police, MP’s  expenses, the BBC and press ownership in general (well more in terms of Sky), the list is endless these days but what similarities do we find in the fictional 1984 and actual 21st century Britain?

Pray we don’t have a hung parliament!

I know it’s easy for many people to chant “lets give them a chance” or “a coalition would be best” or even “a hung parliament is probably best for us all”. Let me just say NONE OF THESE ARE GOOD IDEAS!

Firstly, letting the LibDems in will be terrible beyond belief to all those floating voters who (1) Hate the EU (2) Hate Gordon Brown and New Labour including Blair or (3) don’t vote consistently.  Why?  Because they are further to the left of British politics than Stalin or Pol Pot! That’s Why! [Oh and the Labour Party]

Let me give you ten good reasons why not to let Cleggy near power.

1) Lib/Dems are just not squeaky clean & holier than thou at all

2) The party isn't as Liberal or Democratic as they will tax the pants off us!

3) Vince Cable isn't as good on financial matters as he takes credit for

4) The Party is led by a closet social engineer and exponent of every form of political correctness called Nick Clegg

5) Their existing MPs are not worth a penny

6) They're just as bad on "tax & spend" as the current Labour lot, if not worse. “it’s only cost a penny on tax” I hear them muttering even as I type

7) They're the worst pro-EU party of the lot and that that's not a good thing for all you all you rabid anti EU people who don’t want to vote Labour or UKIP or even BNP!

8) They're one of the worst pro-global warming / Pro-climate change / pro-Scam green tax parties of all, just when it's been exposed as a massive fraud.

9) They've not really changed that much since Jeremy Thorpe was leader or Charles Kennedy or…..

10) An update, [thanks to John Redwood]  and back to Vince Cable again..... he's a "serial flip-flopper"

I would rather fly in the face of 42 years of consistent Tory voting and vote Labour ( even with Gordon Broone at the helm) than suffer the open toed sandals of a powerbase of LibDem MP’s  nannying us into our graves that they will have us dug with our hard earned taxes.

A Final reminder to those of you who hate all things PC… beware the LibDems.

Who hate extra taxes, beware the LibDems

Green taxes, want them?  Beware the LibDems!

Ah that’s better now I have got it off my chest  and with thanks to John Redwoods own Web Pages!

Chuggers!

Today I spent half an hour watching the antics of your so called charity collectors in Portsmouth (Commercial Road) and have to be the first to admit that I am not one who supports this form of charity collection as I prefer to give directly if at all. On top of that I have read reports (in the Times for example) that claim that as little of 10% of what these people collect actually reaches the charity for which they are collecting.

My complaints are pretty much this;
  • I have no desire to be accosted in any shape or form by someone brandishing a clip board and T shirt in an over familiar way.
  • I DO NOT under any circumstances wish to shake hands with a stranger who has already shaken hands with at leat a 1000 other strangers he or she has encountered in the street. Now I know this may seem rude but given the current issues of health regarding Swine flu, MSRA or C-Dif that can be passed so easily from person to person, this handshaking practice is foolhardy to say the least.
  • These collectors are commissioned based as far as I am aware and this I feel is wrong!

Sorry about that... rant over!
