Edwin and the Lonesome Dove

Edwin was a proud and rather portly wood pigeon. He loved his garden and he loved his Edwina too.  But one day poor Edwina was foolish enough to meet Mr Hawk and that was that, she was gone.  Edwin never saw poor Edwina again.

Birds_0017One day as Edwin roamed around his garden picking up an occasional seed or a small morsel or even just an interesting item here and there he wondered if he would ever meet another Edwina. “Oh dear” he sighed in his deep voice.

Winter came and went and Edwin was still in his garden picking up his bits and pieces or taking a little exercise by flying around the trees and roofs of the nearby houses. Sadly he had still not found another Edwina.

Spring was late arriving but the trees were leafy and there were more morsels to pick up. Edwin was quite portly now and liked sitting on a nearby roof in the sun watching the other birds as they played and fed their young.

Feeding TimeEdwin was still wondering if he would meet another Edwina when one warm summer day he noticed he was being watched by a lovely grey collared dove.

Birds_0022 One morning Edwin flew up to the roof where the dove was sitting, “Hellooo, my name’s Edwin” he cooed in his deepest wood pigeon voice to the lonely looking dove.

The dove cooed in reply, “Hellooo Edwin, my name’s Dorcus” and with that she flew off to a nearby pine tree and waited for Edwin to follow.  “Shall we fly around the place” she cooed with a flick of her wings.

Edwin thought for a long while and then asked, “would you like to go for a fly around  the houses Dorcus”? She thought for a long while too, because that’s what pigeons do, then answered “oh yes please Edwin, lets go now” and off they flew, round and round the houses until they were puffed.

Dorcus flew straight back to Edwin's garden and perched on the fence looking down at the flowers while Edwin flew up on to a nearby roof where he could see Dorcus and the flowers in his garden.
