Student Protestors – Poor Dears!

The British press has been reporting on the current rash of student protests across Britain over the increases in university fees in the not too distant future.  Now I don’t object to protest too much just so long as it confined to peaceful protest and not an orgy of mindless violence and vandalism all in the name of “anger of this governments cuts and increases in fees” .  Anger, over what?  A free university education or at least a heavily subsidised one paid for largely by the tax payer.   I seem to recall a time when gaining a degree was not  gaining it as a “right” but earning the degree through hard work.  Yes, it was probably free in those days but it was never going to be able to stay free!   Now I have paid tax for perhaps 47 years now and look likely to have to continue to pay tax on my income (a combination of Sate Pension and my Occupational Pension) for at least another 20 years.  Frankly I don’t see why I should have to subsidise a degree course for some of the unbelievably  stupid  so called students who have rampaged through our cities causing countless millions of pounds worth of damage and costs associated with policing.  I saw one report of a student complaining that all the trouble was caused by the police who were attempting to stop the “rioters” (students?) attacking a building.   Do we need anymore Sports Scientists, Dramatists, Hotel “experts”?  I don’t think so.   We need plumbers, electricians, skilled motor mechanics, brick layers, plasterers and carpenters.  These workers need to be skilled and taught well but they don’t need flaming  degrees!

Here are a few of the least useful degree courses I could find but I am sure that if it were not such a boring experience I could find more.

Childhood And Youth Studies

Creative And Performing Arts

Creative Technologies And Enterprise

Drama And Performance

Entertainment Technology

Film Studies

Hospitality Management - BA (Hons)

Hospitality Management With Tourism

Investigation And Evidence

Why not let me hear about any even more useless courses you can find and perhaps even some that have no purpose whatsoever!  In my days of working I often interviewed people for jobs where it was clear that they were not interested in actual employment, they were only interested in being “professional academics” leaping from one degree course to the next and all funded by the state!  Seems to me that the belief that the state provides all is still alive and well in modern Britain.
